My 6 yr old son who is in karate class LOVES this whole series (so do I)!. Every chapter is a lesson. "Bunjitsu is not just about kicking, hitting, and throwing... It is about finding ways NOT to kick, hit, and throw." That is an important lesson for all kids to know, but especially those who are in martial arts.

Must have for 1st grader. My son loves these books! There are at least 3 of these (maybe more) and he has read all of them so far and really enjoys them.

UPDATE :04/30/2017Now that I am done reading the whole thing I have upped the stars to 4, but this is for a beginner level only in pastel art. Lots of info about pastels, but not any of the new ones in the market, or paper, or how pastel painting has changed into something other than the examples in the book. But, if yous are new to pastel painting or drawing the examples in the book are indispensable and you can try them out in order to learn the feel and texture of the pastel and how it lays with different techniques. Every artist new to pastels will get something out of this book. Once I am finished with trying out all the techniques, will donate the book.Good for the basic understanding, but very old fashioned as far as techniques. Very good info on pastels and paper, I would suggest another book, linked below.All About Techniques in Pastel (All about Techniques Art)/

This is a great classic. I actually owned a copy and gave it away during a move, thinking I would no longer benefit from it. Was I every wrong! A year later, during an art class, the teacher pointed out some techniques in this book that I'd not studied closely enough. Fascinated, I bought another book, and found that I was learning new things from it--not because the book had changed but because I had. That said, I recommend this book to beginning artists and advanced artists alike. It covers so much, and you will learn, as I did, that rereading it at different stages of your artistic development will expose new and helpful information.

I wish I had this book when I first started working in pastels. I have read countless magazines, blogs and books for advice on pastel products. This book saves you time and money by giving you straight information on brands of pastels and papers and boards. Although choices finally comes down to each person's preferences and the amount of money they are willing to invest, it helps to have good advice so that you do not need to try every product yourself. Although it does not cover every brand of paper, board or primer, it is fairly comprehensive and up to date. The techniques section is also very comprehensive, going beyond basic underpainting advice found in most sources, including acrylic mediums which are featured in current magazines and blogs. And from there it moves into oil pastels and other modern painting media. There are step-by-step demonstration pieces for each painting media combination. Although I have been working in pastels for several years, I am finding this book to be an eye-opening resource that I feel will help me move my art forward.

The best thing about it is that I bought it used at a bargain price. It was published in 1991. There are now more brands of pastels and pastel surfaces available. There are many books available with the elementary basic techniques and modern materials. What this book does have is a variety of methods to mix pastels with other media. None of the mixed media presented are original nor exciting. Why would one use expensive soft pastels to make oil paints? If you want to make paint you can purchase high quality pure pigments for less. The cover is attractive.

The Pastel Book: Materials and Techniques is an excellent book for artists unfamiliar with the broad applications of pastels. The author expects the reader has art skills and is applying them to the pastel medium. Consequently, all the examples of the huge variety of pastels feature the author's work--which is a particular style suitable for pastels. As a former professional artist in oils and watercolors, I found the book very valuable to apply the distinctive textures, glazes, and manufacturer-specific, texture-opacity versions from crumble to fine-line very informative. I only wish some other artists' contributions of their discoveries could have been included in the examples to see different styles. Bill Creevy is an excellent and patient writer/artist, taking the reader through logical applications from coarse crumble to mixed media.

I knew basically nothing about using pastels before reading Bill Creevy's "The Pastel Book," although I had experimented with pastels some, and had been disappointed with the results. Creevy covers almost every aspect of using pastels: the pros and cons of different brands of pastels; the pros and cons of papers; the issue of whether or not to use fixatives; and the various techniques of using pastels. He also introduces the reading to different categories of pastels, from the familiar chalk pastel to oil pastels, oil sticks, and others. There are also several chapters about using pastels in mixed media, but I haven't read those in detail yet. The only thing he does not really cover is the business of selling pastels: how to mat, how to frame, etc. Another book that I bought from Amazon, "Pastel Pointers," by Richard McKinley, does include a chapter on the framing and business aspects of painting and drawing with pastels.

I looked over all the available pastel books and their reviews before deciding on The Pastel Book. I am very happy with my choice and believe it is the best. It gives explanation for all types of pastels and the surfaces to use them on. Very good and simple description of techniques for painting by different methods. How to prepare surface of your choice, (even how to make a stronger canvas surface), texturing, dusting, brushing (dry, water, turp). Good step-by-step examples. Very satisfied with this book and I recommend it to anyone that wants to use or has already used pastels. Nancy

I really can't add anything to the content of previous reviews. All I can say is that this is the be all and end all of books on soft and oil pastels. If you're interested in those, you have to have this book.

When my oldest son was young, we practically wore out the Wee Sing Nursery Rhymes and Lullabies CASSETTE TAPE (!), and those songs have stayed with me all these years. I positively LOVED this compilation of music and stories, and thought maybe I was just nostalgic in how fondly I remembered them. So I am on "family #3)" (kids 28,24--16,15--7,4) and the original cassette wore out long ago (plus I wouldn't have any way to play it if I did still have it...) One day I decided to try to buy a CD for a road trip, and this was my immediate first choice. The truth is, my kiddos now love these songs as much as all the others have! They are catchy tunes and fun renditions of oft-repeated mother goose (et al.) nursery rhymes. I love all of the Wee Sing tapes but this one is definitely my favorite!Please like my review if I helped you decide in any way. Thanks.

We expected something more like "Wee Sing Greatest Hits" and were disappointed to hear the amount of dialogue and blabbing. It's supposed to be Wee Sing, not Wee Talk! Blabbing is mixed into the song tracks, there's no escaping it.Songs are good, but cut the jibber jabber. Just sing already!

We love this CD! We purchased it as part of a homeschool curriculum and have enjoyed it on most of our car rides. We easily can spend 1 to 2 hours in the car on any given day and my boys never tire of running through this delightful sing song story. The way the story line incorporates childrens rhymes and lullabies is enchanting and we have all memorized the verses. It is wonderful to have something bring to life the nonsense verse and rhymes that have enchanted generations of children in such a modern, revitalized method. We love WEE SING!

I teach Kindergarten and I have used this little gem for many years. We moved temporarily to a different school because ours was being demolished. I lost the book in the move and I couldn't find a copy anywhere. Fortunately, there was a vendor who had a slightly used copy. My students enjoy these nursery rhymes and lullabies tremendously. I sit at the piano and my kids sing their hearts out.

I learned most of my nursery rhymes from this CD. The CD teaches children many, many nursery rhymes and they do it in a wonderful story that you can’t help but fall in love with. It also comes with a booklet full of all the music and lyrics so your child can read along with the CD.

This is my third copy of Wee Sing Nursery Rhymes. Two I used with my own grandchildren and this one is a baby shower gift. The kids love it and it teaches them a lot of favorite nursery rhymes. It also provides a "cheat sheet" booklet in case the adults have forgotten the words!

I've been reading Tolkien for a long time (since 1964) & as a reader anticipated the Peter Jackson films anxiously wondering what he'd get right & more cynically what would go wrong (remembering the Rankin-Bass & Ralp Bakshi attempts to render the Lord of the Rings into cartoon form 20 or so years before Jackson).I could complain about what was left out of Peter Jackson's trilogy (especially Tom Bombadil, Old Man Willow & the Scouring of the Shire) but the three extant films more than make up for what was left out. Jackson's trilogy runs over with sights & sounds & haunting insights & captures the sweep & complexity that Tolkien lavished on the Lord of the Rings.Jude Fisher's Visual Companion series gives the reader both Tolkien's world & Jackson's vision.The story is there (admittedly in a truncated Readers Digest sort of a way) & the pictures illustrate the episodes & characters the way illustrations should. In this case the wisdom that pictures are worth a thousand words rings true.I could complain that this piece of Tolkien or that piece or another was left out of both the Visual Companions & Jackson's trilogy ...... but why complain?The Visual Companions & Peter Jackson's film trilogy give the casual reader a doorway to Tolkien's world & it reminds those Tolkien readers why we were so moved by Gandalf, Frodo, Sam & Aragorn & compny way long ago when we opened the first book of Tolkien's trilogy.It's good stuff ...

This is a hardback book, oversize so it can accommodate the quality of images and text. A "coffee table" edition is what people would label it. This book is a more definitive version than the photo guide, and it goes into the story with more details and more images.In the first chapter "The Great Task", it recaps the first two movies and what all the characters were doing. Then for Return of the King, Chapter Two pick up with the Kingdom of Gondor, the Realm Aragon is destined to rule. Under the rule of Denethor, father of Boromir and Faramir, he is only the Steward of Gondor. Discovering Boromir's death through one of the seeing-stones has made him power-mad in his grief and bordering on insanity. He is determined to hold on to the throne of Gondor and blames his son, Faramir, for setting Frodo with the One Ring free, and means to stand against Aragon's return as the King of Gondor.The book adds background for people who love the Rings movies, but have not read Tolkien books, and maybe have a few questions. This is not only a wonderful showcase, super packed with gorgeous photos, but explains little nuances to the non-reader of the books, the film assumes you understand.So this book is highly recommended to Ring Collectors, but also for lovers of the movie wanting to know a little more. The images are stunning, well selected and give you a piece of the movie to keep forever.Great Christmas or birthday gift for your LOTR fan.

I was pleased by the really great photographs covering the wonderfully written script that so faithfully attempted to stick to Tolkien's imagination.\It's a pretty book and it covers the film, could any picture book about the Return Of the King contain enough pictures? The answer is no, but this book is pleasing. If you want more, do as I do, order books from other authors to cover the spectrum.

We are all Lord of the Rings fans around here. I got this for my 12 year old son. However,the entire family has thoroughly enjoyed the many photos and behind the scene commentary found in this book. Well worth the money.

This book was a little easier to read than the whole novel. I read whole novel to kid, but he likes to read this book by himself. I got it for him when he was 11.

Great read. If your a fan of LOTR, you'll enjoy this.

I bought this board book for my 1-year-old daughter and she absolutely loves it. She has no idea what sort of horrible tragedy caused a man to dress like a bat an fight crime, but she doesn't care! Thankfully, the book doesn't dwell on Bruce Wayne's past, or the rouges gallery he fights, but mainly on the shapes of Gotham.The book covers basic shapes of: square, triangle, rectangle, circle, oval, star, and includes my daughter's favorite... the bat. My daughter loves to point out the shapes and find the hidden ones on the page. The book is made from solid cardboard material that withstands my daughter's rough handling of the pages.I would recommend this to fans of Batman who hope to spark an interest early in a child's life.

I originally bought this book for my son (1.5 yo) but deep down it was really for me. We've enjoyed it and he has really learned how to identify shapes because of it. Board book that can take a beating and a nibble here and there. Happy with the purchase.

My 2 1/2 year old learned his shapes just after a couple of times of reading this to him. He LOVES this book. It's perfect for a Batman fan and perfect for teaching shapes :-)

This is ADORABLE! I got this for my niece's first birthday so her parents can give her a head start with shapes and of course, Batman. The pages are thick and sturdy, the drawings are bright and bold. This is one that will last a couple of years at least.

Just right for introducing little ones to the super hero without being overly comic book style. It is softened in illustration and tone.
