"IMAGES OF WAR: GERMAN HALF-TRACKS AT WAR 1939-1945" is a book that provides a wide variety of photographs of German halftracks from World War II. I'm an amateur historian, and World War II is my favorite period. While I have many books on aircraft, tanks, and ships from the era, I really can't say that I have much information on the less glamorous but still important halftracks that towed artillery pieces and carried infantry, among other tasks. I bought this book in order to learn more about these mechanical beasts of burden. Below are my impressions of the book.Pros:- There are indeed a wide variety of interesting photographs of most, if not all, German halftracks used in World War II. While not all of the pictures are well-focused (some appear to have been taken by the soldiers themselves rather than professional photographers), many show excellent detail, a boon for modelers.- There are good captions accompanying the pictures, although some of them are a bit repetitive. While I'm not an expert on halftracks and can't vouch for their accuracy, the captions provide specific information for the halftrack shown in the photo.- The book is broken out into six chapters: "The Early Years"; "1941", "1942", "1943", "1944", and "1945", and each chapter includes some summary information from the time frame being discussed, as well as the photographs and captions. There is also an appendix which lists most of the half-tracks in German service, as well as giving variant information for the two half-tracks used to primarily carry infantry rather than tow artillery and/or mount weapons (Sd. Kfz. 250s and 251s).Cons:- While the book doesn't claim to provide anything other than wartime photographs of half-tracks, I was really expecting to see some information on how German half-tracks came to be, as well as some information and technical discussion of the various types. While you get some of this information in the captions, it would have been very helpful, in my opinion, if there were detailed, consolidated information on the half-tracks in the front of the book.- The summary information provided in the chapters contains obvious errors. For example, the book states that for the invasion of the Soviet Union, the Germans assembled 31 panzer divisions (of which halftracks were an integral part). But at the time Operation Barbarossa was launched, the Germans actually only had 21 panzer divisions, and 1 of those was in Africa. (Perhaps the author counted both panzer and motorized divisions in that total.) Another example is the claim that at the end of 1941, the majority of panzer divisions were pulled out of combat and transferred to France to rest, reorganize, and retrain. In actuality, because of the precarious situation at the front for the Germans, very few panzer divisions left the vicinity of front lines, and most had to try and refit and incorporate replacements in-place, while also being involved in trying to counter the on-going Soviet offensives.Overall, the book has many interesting and varied photographs, which is indeed what the book claims to provide. I would have liked more technical discussion of the halftracks, though, and someone should have fact-checked some of the information. I give this book 3.5 stars and round it up to 4, and recommend this book to those who want a good look at German half-tracks and to the modelers out there.
An interesting book with some good information but the pictures lose a lot of detail in their conversion to Kindle. Even reading on my desktop with a large monitor is not as good as reading the print edition.
There is plenty of material about the German panzers already written, this book covers the lesser-talked about armored vehicles the Germans used in WW2. Dozens of photographs I have never seen before, includes some interesting details about the half tracks that were essential for the German war on the Ostfront.
No color photo's or coverage of camouflage schemes.
A most fascinating set of pictures. I enjoyed it!nothing like seeing the real thing in pictures. I most enjoy the tiny details of what the vehicles went thru and what caused the damages and marks of war.
Again this volume fills a frequent void in armored vehicles of Germany.
Great pictures to review. Good explanations. Color photos would have been amazing. Overall worth the 10 bucks.
