Review

"A much-needed biography of a figure who has been ignored"--Standard Examiner "Very easy to read...a much needed study of an Olympian, a celebrity, and a Heavyweight Champion of the world.... Ken Brooks' expertly written biography will hopefully help to raise the profile of Ingemar Johansson"--Sport in American History "Meticulous research...Brooks writes not only about Johansson, but also pens an excellent history of boxing during the late '50s and early '60s...fascinating and enlightening reading...a must read...Ingo deserved to have a good book written about him, and Ken Brooks has done him that service"--Boston Post-Gazette "The first biography to be written about Johansson...entertaining and informative"--Box Nation "This book is one of those that deserves a wide readership. Mr. Brooks has done meticulous research, organized his material, given an array of footnotes to back up that research, and ends up with a lively narrative about a fascinating figure in the world of boxing...excellent...fascinating and enlightening...a must read" --Boxing over Broadway

From the Inside Flap

Ingemar Johansson's right hand--dubbed "The Hammer of Thor"--was the most fearsome in boxing, and Johansson's three fights with Floyd Patterson rank among the sport's classic rivalries. Yet most fans know little about the Swedish playboy who won the world heavyweight championship with a shocking third round knockout of Patterson and held it for six days short of a year (1959-1960). During his reign, the raffish "Ingo" hit fashionable nightspots on two continents, romanced Elizabeth Taylor, and refused to kowtow to the mobsters who controlled boxing. This first-ever biography of Johansson chronicles his fistic triumphs as a Goteborg teen prodigy, his humiliating disqualification for "cowardice" at the 1952 Olympics, his storybook romances with Birgit Lundgren and Edna Alsterlund and his post-career life and tragic early dementia.

As.a thirteen year old I still recall the Friday evening in late June of 1959 when I celebrated Ingemar's amazing victory over Floyd Patterson. You see the big Swede was my idol, a unique reality for a Jewish boy from Brooklyn.at the time and I still have the scrapbook to prove it. The passage of many years have long since dulled those memories but it was with happy expectation that I discovered the existance of Mr. Brooks informative biography. The tome brought back many long forgotten memories as well as providing me with a full description of the man I only knew as a boxer who possessed an amazing right hand and a beautiful fiancee. A quick delightful trip down memory lane.

Finally, one of boxing's somewhat forgotten champion's life story is put into print. There was a time in the late 1950's and early 1960's when Ingemar Johansson was as popular and as well known as any athlete or movie star on earth. Exciting, informative, and very well written, I've read literally dozens of boxing biographies , and this was one of the best . Very well done .

Pleasantly surprised with this tight , informative bio. It was no polish job. The author did his homework. I learned a lot about the fighter and the man. I happily recommend it.

Excellent read on one of boxing'as most underrated and forgotten Heavyweight champions. I became interested in Ingemar Johansson after recently seeing his appearance on a Dinah Shore Variety show from 1959 or 1960. He struck me as a humble but multi-talented man as he acted, sang and joked on the show. This book gives enormous input into Johansson as a child, a young boxer, the HW champion as well as his life after boxing. It is a recommended read for every boxing buff.

The author, Ken Brooks points out early in the book that no other biography has ever been penned on this subject. Ingomar Johannson was an accidental champion, one who dots the the heavyweight championship annals along with Leon Spinks, Jack Sharkey, and Primo Carnera.Johansson's bust populates Canastota's boxing hall of fame, but his ascent was meteoric, and his fall, precipitous.Aside from His destruction of Eddie Machen, and his surprise obliteration of Floyd Patterson in their first fight, there really is little to celebrate in his career. Yet, like recent biographies of Jack Sharkey, Ezzard Charles and Joe Walcott, there is some interesting reading here.It is fascinating to see how a man deals with the instant adulation a heavyweight title brings him. It is equally interesting to read how a man deals with the disappointment inherent in defeat and loss of status when he loses his title. The title is only borrowed, and as much asa man feels he owns it, he really does not.And in Ingo's case, he lived out his life cheerfully and contentedly, befriending his boxing nemesis, Floyd Patterson. He eschewed his celebrity status, took his pleasures where he was able, and lived life on his own terms. Sadly, both he and Patterson suffered from pugilistic dementia in their final years. For the boxing cognoscenti, an interesting read.

I lived through this, and still learned a great deal. I became immersed in the life of a very cool guy, and was sorry when I was done with the book. I almost feel like I knew Ingemar Johansson now.

Great book well written

Thoroughly enjoyable. Quick read. 2nd great boxing book I have read recently along with Tris Dixon's The Road to Nowhere.
