Been reloading for nearly 40 years, and if there is a book I constantly return to for info, and at the same time, find very interesting, it is this book. Waters shows no favortism to any manufacturer of equipment or components and does a first rate job of developing loads that work, specifying purpose in the process (hunting, target, etc.).If you aspire to gain as much info as you can, regarding ammunition & reloading, you this book!

I've already wasted way too many hours reading and daydreaming about cartridges I have no practical need for, and this book certainly adds fuel to the fire. If the introductory paragraphs for each cartridge in typical reloading manuals seem too brief to you, be comforted that Mr. Water's efforts have largely remedied the situation. The organization of the book is puzzling, it being a collection of magazine columns put in neither chronological sequence nor in order of bore size... nor in any other recognizable pattern. But it has an excellent table of contents. As far as the load data being old, I'm sure newer powders have been introduced (and suspect some REALLY new ones will be shortly) but most if not all of the listed powders are still in common use and I think the data is still good. Perhaps if your focus is narrow, say you just load ONE cartridge, or ONLY want loads good enough to hit a deer and don't care about ballistics trivia or firearms history, then maybe this is not the book for you. For me it is a great read, and will be a great resource once I get back to shooting more. Not really a big criticism, but I observe that Mr. Waters does not come across as tremendously interested in wildcat cartridges... especially ones with sharp shoulders. I had to look a long time at this book to find the name "Ackley" mentioned even once. I find that very remarkable in any in-depth discussion of cartridges.

This reloading book is great if you want a history lesson for each load. For the price there is a lot of information but most of it is not pertinent. If your looking for a reloading guide this is not the best choice. A lot of the information is outdated, as most of the powders called out do not exist anymore. Purely educational.

For the last six months I had been borrowing Volumes I and II of Ken Water's Pet Loads from a friend when I saw this new complete edition at Amazon. Now all of Ken Waters' classical reloading articles are available in one book. In addition to that, there are new articles that were not in the original two volumes. I don't work up any load without seeing what Ken Waters has to say about it or other closely related loads. No reloader should be without this timeless and comprehensive reference on rifles and reloading. One of the most interesting new articles not found in the original two volumes is "Developing Pet Loads" where Ken describes how to measure the "pressure ring" on a fired case to determine the case pressure relative to a factory load to verify that maximum pressure hasn't been exceeded.

At first I figured with all the load data on the internet who needs loading manuals. I was wrong. Waters gives a great history of each cartridge, great tips on bullet molds, powder to use, application of each bullet weight. Now I have or have access to most old Handloader magazines with his Pet Loads in them, so had already had most of his Pet Loads, however the convenience of all of them in 1 book was too great to pass up. Especially useful to me is the data for less popular cartridges that I like to shoot. He didnt cover all of them...I wish 33WCF was covered better, as well as 45-75. But at least there is some limited data there for these oddballs, unlike all other loading manuals, and a LOT of data here for other obsolete cartridges. And data for more modern cartridges too. Makes a great bedside reader too. One warning...reading up on cartridges you initially had no interest in will make you want to go purchase a gun in that caliber! Ken Waters writes in a nice way. By the time you read four or five articles, you feel like he is a good friend. All in all I would not be without this book. If guns are simply tools and you reload just so they can go bang, you wont really need this book. But if guns are art, history, mechanical marvels, and an extension of you and your way of life and you want to tweak them to their ultimate potential, I highly recomend this book.

A collection of articles including load data for many cartridges, some very old. Extremely helpful, complete with historical info on foreign and domestic cartridges. It is fun to just go thru the pages and learn more about powders bullets, etc. No library would be complete without this volume. Ken Waters has done a masterful job with this encyclopedia of the shooting sports, and military ammo.

Dad loved it, I thought it was a bit overpriced when there's a thing called the internet. But hey, it's hard to get Gen X to just Google things out guess.

This thick book is a collection of magazine articles by Ken Waters spanning several decades. It's great reading for handloaders who want more information about a huge assortment of calibers. This is NOT a "how to reload" book and some of the information may be a little out of date. Things in the reloading world have changed a bit since the 70's and 80's but most of this is still relevant. If you already have several current reloading manuals this would be an excellent addition!
