I struggled with this book. At times it was entertaining and other times it was stressful even reading about her three boys. I found the "heroine" annoying and extremely self- centered. And note to authors: why is everyone that goes to college a graduate of an IVY LEAGUE COLLEGE? We, as readers, are not so stupid as to believe that only smart people are Ivy Leaguers...it seems to happen in almost every book I read where the author has to state where their "character" went to college. And that college is either Harvard, Yale, Brown, Vassar.... As if the regular masses can't comprehend graduation from a state school. But I digress; this book tried it's hardest to make a point but the point was lost in endless shoe throwing, poop throwing, work out classes....not a relaxing read or particularly good one. I gave it two stars because I did finish but confess to fast forwarding.
I found this book “by accidentâ€....that is to say, it was recommended at the bottom of the Amazon page of another book I was looking at (I love that Amazon does that)!Anyway, I read it over the course of two days and absolutely loved it! The author made her characters so real and relatable and most of all LIKABLE! I hate it when I buy a book that looks good and then find I don’t like the characters at all and have to stop reading it. That definitely wasn’t the case here!I will say this, however....it made me glad I only had one child, lol!!!! 😂😛
Part of the reason that I loved this book is because I see myself in Lanie, and I think a lot of moms would. I moved away from family while pregnant, doing most of the packing all by myself because my workaholic husband moved a month earlier to start the job. At some point, you realize you're just not the same person you used to be - you carry a diaper bag, not a purse; you're "just a mom," not a an associate attorney; instead of going to the cocktail parties, you're going to Gymboree.The questions Lanie faces are the same ones we all do. Can we reconnect with our younger dreams? When did being something for someone else mean that we didn't have time to be what we need to be for ourselves? At some point, isn't important to say "no, I need to do this for me?" And, can you keep it all together at the end of the day?This was well written, an easy, fast read with plenty of questions to ponder at the end of the day. You'll be glad you read it.
I read the book for a change of mood after reading about the holocaust. This book was funny, happy, sad, and realistic. Realistic about marital relationships needing work. Realistic about a mother dealing with three very young children and a marriage. And realistic about beauty. I enjoyed this optimistic story. Good job, Katherine Center.
This is a book every mom can relate to. Lanie is a very real woman in the trenches trying to raise her small children. This book felt incomplete to me. It felt like it should have been funny but it was really a drama. The stories could have been written in a way that it would have lighthearted but that’s not what this is. In some ways it’s about a woman at her breaking point who needs to get herself back after being a mom for so long.
Loved every minute of this book! Marriage, children, parenting, family of origin and how it shapes us - it's all here with laugh out loud moments and poignant, simple truths.
Having raised three boys I could relate to the constant mayhem and hilarity of Lanie's life. I enjoyed the thoughtfully created characters and their development, especially that of the momzilla from the park and the mean neighbor. As I am learning, Katherine Center has a knack for a clever and unpredictable storyline that will keep you glued to the novel and an ending that may surprise.
I loved this book. It was very engaging and funny throughout. I think I read the whole thing in a day or two. It's about a couple in their 30s and parenting their 3 little boys as they move to the East coast from Texas as the husband goes to college for his music degree. The main character does a lot of self-discovery throughout the book and is able to find balance as she juggles 3 boys and her own needs for creativity and independence. It's a nice lighthearted story with a very casual writing style. Anyone with 3 or more children would definitely love it. Others may like it too, but it's more relatable for those with multiple children and maybe a slightly quirky sense of humor.
